Kenneth Jay Beukema est né en Février 1927, il est le fils d'Harry et Anna Beukema.
Frère d'Harriett & Gerald "Jerry" Beukema. En 1930, la famille Beukema vie au 1 144 Fulton Street à Grand-Rapids. Harry est le seul revenu de la famille, il est maçon. Après avoir quitté l'école, Kenneth est employé au “Advertising Department of the Press”. En Octobre 1944, le frère de Kenneth, Gerald, est en service en Europe quand il est blessé en Italie. En Février 1945, Kenneth célèbre son 18e anniversaire et s'enrôle dans l'armée sous le matricule #3147097. Il est marin de 2e classe, il est assigné à l'U.S.S Indianapolis le 12 Mai 1945 et part en service maritime. En Juillet, le bateau jette l'encre à San Francisco, a cette occasion le navire charge la cargaison secrète. Ces parents font le voyage du Michigan pour allez le voir. Et ce n'est pas chose aisée, puisqu'en pleine période de rationnement, les voyages de ce type sont très réglementés.... Le Grand-Rapids Press précisera qu'il envoya sa dernière lettre depuis Pearl Harbor avant d'être perdu en mer. Kenneth disparait durant le naufrage du navire, personne ne sait ce qu'il lui arriva... Son nom est noté dans le tableau des disparus au Manila American Cemetery à Manille. |
