Ralph est né en 1916 à Grand-Rapids et est le fils de John Engelsman & de Fannie Bolt.
Il fait ces études à l'Union High School. En Avril 1940, il vit avec ses parents au 1 014 Tamarack Street. A cette date, son père est décédé, sa mère est la chef de famille, elle ne travaille pas. elle vit avec ses enfants: Ralph (Aide-Machiniste dans l'industrie laitière); Hemran (ouvrier dans une fabrique de frigo ), Nella (travaille dans une laverie) et Clarence. Au 28 Juin de la même année, il épouse Dorothy J. Stehouwer à Grand-Rapids. Tous deux partent vivre au 246 Travis Street N.E à Grand-Rapids. Ralph est ensuite noté comme étant employé en tant qu'ouvrier. En 1941, Ralph & Dorothy ont leurs premier enfant: Thomas. L'année suivante, Dorothy accouche de Robert. En 1942, ils vivent au 1 012 Cogsweet Street N.W. Au 20 Janvier 1944, Ralph s'engage dans la Navy à Détroit sous le Matricule # 9515501. Il sera affecté à l'U.S.S Indianapolis le 24 Avril 1944, date à laquelle le navire est encré à San Francisco. Il disparaît avbreux compagnons lors du torpillage de son navire. Son nom est inscrit sur le tableau des disparu au Manila American Cemetery à Manille. Son nom apparait aussi sur le "Casualties Books" de l'U.S Navy. Kenneth à deux frères en service: Herman: T/4 au Camp Gruber (Oklahoma) Clarence: Machiniste moteur de 3e Classe à Memphis (Tennessee) Les deux reviendront de la guerre, Clarence décèdera en 2003 et Herman en 2007. |
