John est né en 1918 à Grand-Rapids. Il est le fils de Joseph Hoogerwerf et de Celia Roon (tous deux Hollandais).
Il est le frère de: Marjorie (1903), Joe (1903), Florence (1906), Anthony (1909), Etta (1913), Gertrude (1916), Harold (1923), Richard (1926) & Dorothy et Donald (1927). En 1920, la famille Hogerwerf vie dans sa propre maison au 349 Robey Place à Grand-Rapids. John Sr travail dans l'industrie de l'ameublement. En 1930, la famille vie à la même adresse, John Sr est machiniste, toujours dans l'industrie de l'ameublement, Marjory travaille dans une laverie. John Jr étudie au Davis Technical High School où il est diplômé. En 1940, John Junior est ouvrier à "Seating Co;" Au 30 Novembre 1940, John Jr épouse Claire Bengelink à Grand Rapids. Il est enrôler en Avril 1940 sous le matricule #9528548. Le 25 Juin 1945, il est affecté à l'USS Indianapolis en tant que Machiniste de 1e classe. Pour ce rapprocher de son mari, Claire part vivre à San Francisco et s'installe au 1 108 Sigsbee Street S.E Il disparaît lors du naufrage de son navire. Son nom est inscrit sur le tableau des disparus du Manila American Cemetery à Manille. |
