Stanley was born in March 19th, 1918 in Wilkes Barre (Pennsylvania). He is the son of Stanley Bevan and Catherine Powell.
With his parents, he grew up in Wilkes Barre in a neighborhood of laborers working in coal mine, where they stayed for a couple of years. But his parents end up moving in suburban area of Detroit (Michigan) to work in the Ford factory where the pay is higher. |

In 1920, Walter Powell, the brother of Catherine, lives with the family on Grand Avenue in Detroit. Walter is a veteran of the WWI, he went to Detroit to work in the Ford factories, but went back again some time later to Pennsylvania to join the police.

Le 4 Octobre 1941, Stanley Bevan Jr épouse Betty Jane Shaw, à Gesu Church à Détroit. Lui à 23 ans et elle 21. Il est enrôlé dans la Navy le 19 Décembre 1943 sous l’A.S.N #9523244. Après quelques mois d’entrainement, il rejoint l’U.S.S Woodworth en Août 1944 et y restera jusqu’en Juin 1945. Il embarqua probablement le 14 Août à San Francisco quand le navire accosta, avant de repartir dans la foulée pour rejoindre Pearl Harbor qu’il rejoindra le 20 Août pour un mois d’exercice de formation. Puis le 30 Septembre le navire rejoint les Atoles d’Ulithi pour des patrouilles anti Sous-Marins puis rejoindra le TG 38.1. Le 10 octobre le Woodworth prend part à une mission de soutien dans une task force navale chargée d’aller bombarder Okinawa et les installations navales de Appari(Nord de Luzon - Philippine). Lors de ces manœuvres plusieurs ″Zero″ japonais tenteront de couler le navire, mais l’équipage réussira à les détruire. Le 15 Octobre, le Woodworth se prépare à prendre part à une expédition contre des installations japonaise près de Luzon (Philippine) et dureront jusqu’à la fin du mois. Le mois de Novembre 1944 restera calme, l’équipage du Woodworth effectue de la maintenance et des exercices et des patrouilles anti sous-marin dans les îles Palau. Le mois de décembre se déroule au large de Peleliu et d’Angaur dans les îles de Palau, ainsi qu’une escorte de navire dans le Golf de Leyte. En Janvier 1945, le Woodworth effectue une mission de convoi Ulithi, puis aide au sauvetage du LCI (L)-600 avant de faire une mission de chasse avec le McCalla. A la mi-janvier, le navire effectue des exercices de tirs et sert de navire-station pour ces exercices. Cela durera jusqu’en février. En mars, le navire est assigné à des missions de recherches et de sauvetage, puis effectue des patrouilles au large du canal de Mugai avant d’accoster au port d’Ulithi où il fera des missions d’escortes et des exercices d’artillerie jusqu’au 5 mai. Après quoi il fît une mission de ravitaillement de l’ile Makin au port de Retto. Du 10 au 28 Mai 1945, le Woodworth participe prend part au bombardement d’Okinawa puis part en réparation jusqu’à 6 juin. Alors qu’il est encore sur ce destroyer, le navire accoste dans la petite ville de Kagoshima (aucune date), durant ce temps, il fît du troc avec un habitant : ce dernier accepta de lui échanger un tableau contre une demi-tasse de sucre ! Il ramena ainsi un beau souvenir de son épopée du pacifique. Le 20 Juin 1945, il embarque sur l’U.S.S Burias (AG-69) qui était un navire lourdement armée mais qui à cette période subit de profond changement pour devenir un navire de réparation. Basé à Saipan, il réparait les navires endommagés lors à Iwo Jima et Okinawa. Le navire quitte Saipan le 30 Octobre 1945, passe par Wakayama pour y prendre des militaires qui devait rentrer aux Etats-Unis (probablement dans le cadre de la mission ″Magic Carpet″) et atteint San Francisco le 28 Novembre 1945 puis le 30 du même mois fait route à destination de Bremerton (Etats de Washington) qu’il attendra le 3 Décembre et commence les préparatifs de déclassement. Le 18 Décembre 1945, Stanley Bevan Junior est libéré du service actif et peut retourner à Détroit. A son retour au Pays, Stanley prend un emploi de vente d’aspirateur puis des fenêtres et des portes anti-tempêtes. Finalement en 1952, il crée sa propre entreprise de construction J & J Modernization. Stanley et Betty auront 2 filles. Stanley retournera régulièrement avec sa famille à Wilkes-Barre (Pennsylvanie) pour se rappeler son enfance Il décède le 19 Mars 2007 à Rochester Hill (Michigan). |

In 1940, the Bevan family lives on Lawrence Street in Detroit. Stanley works 40 hours a week, and will increase the pace of work to achieve the 50 hours / week.
October 4th, 1941, Stanley Bevan Jr. Marries Betty Jane Shaw at Gesu Church in Detroit. He is 23 years old and she is 21 years old. He enlisted in the Navy on December 19th, 1943 under the A.S.N # 9523244. After a few months of training, he joined the U.S.S Woodworth in August 1944 until June 1945. He probably boarded on the ship on August 14th in San Francisco where the ship docked, before sailing to Pearl Harbor. The ship reaches Pearl Harbor on August 20th for one month of training exercise. Then on September 30th, the ship joined the Ulithi island to be part of the Anti-Submarine patrols and will join Task Group 38.1. On October 10th the Woodworth takes part in a support mission in a naval task force to bomb Okinawa and the naval facilities in Aparri (Northern Luzon - Philippine). During these maneuvers several japanese fighter aircrafts "Zero" attempted to sink the ship, but the crew managed to destroy them. On October 15th, the Woodworth is preparing to take part in an expedition against the Japanese installations around Luzon (Philippines) and the expedition will last until the end of the month. The month of November 1944 will remain calm, the crew of Woodworth performs maintenance and exercises and anti-submarine patrols in the Palau Islands. The ship remain in Peleliu and Angaur in the Palau Islands in decembre, and performed an escort for ships in the Gulf of Leyte. In January 1945, Woodworth is involved in a Ulithi Island convoy mission and in the rescue of the LCI (L) -600 before being involved in a hunting mission with the McCalla. In mid-January, the ship is engaged in target practice and serves as a station ship for these exercises. This will last until February. In March, the ship was assigned to search and rescue missions and conducts patrols on Mugai Canal before docking at Ulithi harbor where it will do escort missions and artillery exercises until May 5th. After that, the ship accomplished a refueling mission from the Makin Island to Port Retto. From 10th to 28th May 1945, the USS Woodworth takes part in the bombardment of Okinawa and then is stopped for repairs until June 6th. While still on the destroyer that docked in the small town of Kagoshima (no date), Stanley made a living by trading with a japanese civilian: He got a painting, in exchange of half a cup of sugar! He thus brought a beautiful memory of the Pacific War back home. June 20th, 1945, Stanley embarked on U.S.S Burias (AG-69) which was a heavily armed ship but at that time was undergoing deep changes to become a repair ship. Based in Saipan, U.S.S Burias repaired damaged ships at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The ship leaves Saipan in October 30th, 1945, sails through Wakayama to take the soldiers who had to return to the United States (probably as part of the mission "Magic Carpet"), and reach San Francisco on November 28th, 1945. On the 30th of the same month, the ship sails to Bremerton (Washington States) where i twill remain until December 3rd and began preparations for decommissioning. In December 18th, 1945, Stanley Bevan Junior was released from active duty and was able to return to Detroit. When he came back to the city, Stanley took a job for selling vacuum cleaner and storm windows. Finally in 1952, he started his own construction company :″ J & J Modernization″. Stanley and Betty had two daughters. Stanley used to go back regularly with his family to Wilkes-Barre (Pennsylvania) for remembering his childhood. Stanley pass away on March 19th, 2007 in Rochester Hills (Michigan). |
